Stabbing Arrest

On May 20th, 2017, Officers responded to Brooks Hospital for a report of an apparent stabbing victim. The victim, a 33 year old male from Dunkirk, was able to give responding Officers a statement regarding the incident, including positively identifying the suspect, Christopher D. Cancel-Vazquez, 18, also from Dunkirk.

The alleged incident occurred at the corner of East Fourth Street and Park Avenue when a verbal confrontation turned physical. During the incident, Cancel allegedly produced a knife, cutting the victim in his lower left abdomen. Cancel fled the scene and the victim was taken to Brooks Hospital, then later flown by helicopter to ECMC for treatment.
A warrant was signed by the Honorable Judge Kuzdale, charging Cancel with Assault in the First Degree, a class B Felony. Cancel turned himself into Police and was taken into custody on May 30th, 2017. Cancel was remanded to Chautauqua County Jail on $50,000 cash bail and $100,000 property.

Assault Investigation


On November 18, 2016, at 6:08 PM, City Patrol Officers and Detectives responded to a reported disturbance at 104 Webster Street, Dunkirk, NY. Upon arrival Officers found that an altercation occurred between 2 males at that location. A 26 year old male victim suffered multiple stab wounds during the altercation. Dunkirk Fire/Rescue responded along with ALSTAR Ambulance and the victim was treated at the scene and then flown to ECMC in Buffalo. The investigation is ongoing into this incident and Police have a person of interest in the case. Dunkirk Police were assisted at the scene by Dunkirk Fire Department, ALSTAR Ambulance, Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office, Chautauqua County Forensic Identification Team Members and the New York State Police.
