Buckle-up New York Mobilization

The Dunkirk Police Department, along with other area Law Enforcement agencies, want to advise motorists that beginning May 20^th and continuing through June 2^nd the national Click It or Ticket Seat Belt Mobilization will be taking place on area roadways. Area law enforcement will be out on the roadways looking for vehicles being operated by occupants not using their safety belts and children not secured in an appropriate safety seat. The goal of this initiative is to increase voluntary compliance to the seat belt laws. While New York State has a 90% use rate of seat belts, in 2009 approximately 90 people died in motor vehicle crashes every day. Seat belts have been shown to reduce the risk of death or serious injury by as much as 50%. In 2010 seat belts saved an estimated 12,546 lives according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  The Dunkirk Police Department will be participating in this mobilization to help save lives by strongly enforcing seat belt laws.

            In addition to a strong enforcement of seat belt laws the Dunkirk Police Department will have an increased enforcement of operators who use their cell phone while driving. Individuals who continue to use their cell phone while operating a motor vehicle cause approximately 25% of all car accidents. Texting while driving makes you 23 times more likely to have a crash and causes about 1,600,000 accidents every year according to the National Safety Council. Driving while distracted is a serious offense to not just yourself but to all other motorists on the road with you. If you must use your phone while driving use a hands free device. That phone call or text is definitely not worth your life or the consequences of taking someone else's.

In an emergency, precious seconds can be the difference between life or death.

With a new 911 system being implemented by the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, first-responders will have access to vital information even before they arrive at a scene. The system, dubbed Smart911, can provide emergency responders with everything down to floor plans, medical conditions and more, as soon as the call is received.

The Sheriff's Office, Dunkirk Police Department and the Fredonia Police Department Dispatch Centers will receive the users profile information once a 911 call is placed and answered at one of these points.

 

"I think that it's very important that people sign up for this service," said Chief David Ortolano. "The system will only be as good as the participation that we get."
